Running & Cycling in Phoenix: Best Routes & Trails

Phoenix’s desert landscape, mountain parks, and canal system create a unique running and cycling environment. The key is adapting to the climate—early mornings from May through September are essential, but the cooler months offer some of the best outdoor fitness conditions in the country.

South Mountain Park Trails

South Mountain Park, one of the largest urban parks in the world, offers over 50 miles of trails for running and mountain biking. The National Trail traverses the entire park with challenging elevation changes and desert scenery. Shorter options like the Mormon Trail and Kiwanis Trail provide intense workouts closer to the trailheads. The desert terrain and elevation gain make these trails excellent for building strength.

Arizona Canal Path

The Arizona Canal multi-use path runs approximately 70 miles through the Valley, following the canal system through Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Glendale. The flat, paved path is one of the best cycling routes in the metro and provides accessible running terrain. The Scottsdale segment near Old Town passes through particularly scenic areas with mountain views.

Papago Park

Papago Park provides a convenient central Valley running destination with both paved paths and unpaved trails through the distinctive red butte formations. The park’s moderate hills and accessible trails make it popular for runners of all levels. The proximity to the Desert Botanical Garden and Phoenix Zoo adds visual interest.

Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak

While more hiking than running, Camelback’s Echo Canyon and Cholla trails and Piestewa Peak’s Summit Trail provide intense cardiovascular workouts. Some fitness enthusiasts treat these as trail running destinations, though the steep terrain requires caution. Early morning starts are essential year-round due to heat and crowds.

Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt (Scottsdale)

The Indian Bend Wash runs the length of Scottsdale, providing a connected path through parks, lakes, and open space. The path is flat and well-maintained, making it one of the best cycling and running corridors in the East Valley. The greenbelt’s length allows for extended rides and runs in a pleasant setting.

Tempe Town Lake

The path around Tempe Town Lake provides a flat 5-mile loop with views of the water and surrounding mountains. The connected path system extends along the Salt River, adding distance options. The location near ASU adds energy and people-watching.

Major Events

Phoenix hosts the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon (January—the perfect time for desert running), the PHX Half Marathon, and numerous trail running events. The cycling calendar includes El Tour de Tucson (a short drive south), Tour de Fat, and organized group rides. The mild winter makes October through March peak event season.

Tips for Phoenix Runners and Cyclists

The summer heat is the defining challenge. From May through September, run or ride before 6 AM or after 7 PM. Carry more water than you think you need, and know the signs of heat-related illness. The cooler months (November through March) offer perfect conditions with clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Factor outdoor access into your neighborhood search. Communities near South Mountain, the canal paths, and mountain preserves offer the best trail-side living.
