Running & Cycling in Richmond: Best Routes & Trails
Richmond’s James River, rolling terrain, and growing trail network make it one of the best cities on the East Coast for running and cycling. The city’s outdoor recreation culture has earned it recognition as a top fitness city, and the trail infrastructure continues to expand.
James River Park System Trails
The James River Park System provides over 600 acres of urban parkland with trail networks on both banks of the James. The Buttermilk Trail on the south bank offers technical trail running with rocks, roots, and elevation changes—a genuine mountain biking and trail running experience within the city. The North Bank Trail provides a more moderate experience with river views.
The combination of technical trail and river scenery makes the James River trails unique among urban trail systems. The Forest Hill neighborhood provides excellent access to the south-bank trails.
Virginia Capital Trail
The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile paved path connecting Richmond to Williamsburg along the James River and Route 5. The trail passes through historic plantations, Sherwood Forest, and riverside scenery. It’s one of the best long-distance cycling trails on the East Coast and provides exceptional out-and-back options for various distances.
The trail starts at the Great Shiplock Park in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, making it accessible from the urban core.
The Fan and Monument Avenue
Running through the Fan District and along Monument Avenue is a classic Richmond experience. The wide, tree-lined median of Monument Avenue provides a nearly 2-mile straight running corridor through historic architecture. The Fan’s grid of streets adds variety for neighborhood runs.
Bryan Park and Forest Hill Park
Bryan Park in Northside provides a wooded running experience with trails through the Azalea Garden and connecting paths. Forest Hill Park in the neighborhood of the same name offers 105 acres with trails, open meadows, and connections to the James River trail system.
Pocahontas State Park
Twenty minutes south of downtown, Pocahontas State Park offers over 60 miles of trails for mountain biking and trail running. The terrain ranges from beginner-friendly fire roads to expert-level single-track. The park provides the best off-road cycling in the metro area.
Major Events
Richmond hosts the Richmond Marathon and Half Marathon (November), the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K (one of the largest 10K races in the country), and numerous trail running events. The cycling community is active with organized rides, and the Tour de Richmond events showcase the city’s cycling infrastructure.
Tips for Richmond Runners and Cyclists
Richmond’s climate provides excellent running conditions from September through May. Summer heat and humidity require early morning starts. The James River trails can be slippery when wet.
