Volunteering in Raleigh: How to Give Back in Your Community

May 30, 2026

Raleigh’s volunteer culture benefits from the Triangle’s concentration of universities, tech companies, and a civic-minded population that translates education and resources into community service. The newcomer-friendly volunteer organizations make getting involved straightforward. Here’s where to start.

Food Security Organizations

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina serves 34 counties from its Raleigh headquarters. Volunteers sort and pack food at the distribution center, and the organization’s scale means there are always shifts available. The food bank’s community kitchen program provides prepared-meal volunteering for those who want a more hands-on experience.

Inter-Faith Food Shuttle combines food rescue, nutrition education, and community gardens in a model that addresses food insecurity from multiple angles. Volunteers work in community gardens, assist with food distribution, and support nutrition education programs.

Housing and Community Development

Habitat for Humanity of Wake County builds homes throughout the county and operates ReStore locations. The Wake County affiliate is one of the most active in the state, with regular build days and a strong volunteer community.

Rebuilding Together of the Triangle repairs homes for low-income homeowners, seniors, and people with disabilities. The annual Rebuilding Day mobilizes hundreds of volunteers for concentrated neighborhood improvement.

Youth and Education

Communities In Schools of Wake County provides support services to students in Wake County Public Schools — mentoring, tutoring, and resource navigation. The organization connects volunteers directly with schools that need support.

NC State University Extension and Durham Literacy Center (serving the broader Triangle) provide adult education and literacy volunteering. Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County welcome volunteers for after-school programming and mentoring.

Environmental and Outdoor

Triangle Land Conservancy protects natural areas throughout the region and organizes volunteer workdays for trail maintenance, habitat restoration, and land stewardship. Keep Wake County Beautiful coordinates community cleanups and beautification projects.

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department welcomes volunteers for park maintenance, community garden programs, and greenway trail stewardship.

How to Find Opportunities

Activate Good serves as the Triangle’s volunteer connector, maintaining a searchable database of opportunities and organizing community service events. United Way of the Greater Triangle coordinates regional volunteer campaigns and helps match skills with needs.
