Weekend Getaways Near Austin: Day Trips & Road Trips

May 21, 2026

Austin’s position in the Texas Hill Country puts wine trails, swimming holes, small-town charm, and some of Texas’s most distinctive landscapes within easy reach. The Hill Country radiates westward, San Antonio sits an hour south on I-35, and the Gulf Coast beaches are a manageable half-day drive. Here are the best escapes within road-trip range.

Under Two Hours

Fredericksburg (1.5 hours west)

Fredericksburg is the Hill Country’s premier destination town — a German-heritage community with a walkable Main Street lined with wine tasting rooms, shops, restaurants, and the kind of small-town charm that draws visitors year-round. The town sits at the center of the Texas Hill Country wine region, with over 50 wineries and tasting rooms within a short drive. The National Museum of the Pacific War — the only museum in the country dedicated exclusively to the Pacific Theater of World War II — is a world-class facility that surprises visitors with its depth. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, 18 miles north, provides the signature hiking experience — a massive pink granite dome with 360-degree views of the Hill Country from its summit.

Wimberley (1 hour southwest)

Wimberley is the Hill Country’s bohemian counterpart to Fredericksburg — an arts community along Cypress Creek with galleries, restaurants, and the iconic Blue Hole swimming area. The Wimberley town square hosts a vibrant market on the first Saturday of each month (March through December), drawing vendors and visitors from across the region. Jacob’s Well Natural Area provides one of Texas’s most photographed swimming holes — a crystalline spring-fed pool emerging from an artesian well.

San Marcos (45 minutes south)

San Marcos sits on the spring-fed San Marcos River — one of the most consistently clear and temperate waterways in Texas, maintaining 72 degrees year-round. Tubing the San Marcos River is a Central Texas summer tradition, and the Lions Club tube rental operation makes it accessible. The outlet malls draw shoppers, and Texas State University gives the town its college-town energy. Wonder World Cave and the Meadows Center glass-bottom boat tours add family-friendly options.

Lockhart (35 minutes south)

The barbecue capital of Texas — a designation that carries serious weight in a state obsessed with smoked meat. Kreuz Market, Smitty’s Market, Black’s Barbecue, and Chisholm Trail Barbecue provide a concentrated sampling of the Central Texas post-oak-smoked tradition. The town’s courthouse square and small-town atmosphere make the barbecue pilgrimage feel like a genuine getaway rather than just a meal.

Two to Three Hours

San Antonio (1.5 hours south)

San Antonio delivers one of Texas’s richest weekend experiences. The River Walk — the city’s iconic below-street-level waterway lined with restaurants, shops, and hotels — provides the centerpiece. The Alamo and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) provide the historical depth. The Pearl District — a former brewery complex transformed into a food, retail, and cultural destination — has become one of the most vibrant urban districts in Texas. Natural Bridge Caverns, north of the city, adds a geological-adventure element.

New Braunfels (1 hour south)

This German-heritage town on the Guadalupe and Comal rivers is Central Texas’s summer-recreation hub. Tubing the rivers is the signature activity — the Comal River’s spring-fed 72-degree water and gentle current make it the family-friendly option, while the Guadalupe offers more adventurous float sections. Schlitterbahn waterpark is one of the country’s largest and most popular. Gruene (pronounced “Green”), a historic district within New Braunfels, preserves 19th-century buildings with shops, restaurants, and Gruene Hall — the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas.

Garner State Park (3 hours west)

Garner State Park on the Frio River is a Texas summer tradition — the clear, cold Frio provides swimming, tubing, and the canyon scenery that makes the park one of the most popular in the Texas state park system. The nightly summer dances at the park’s pavilion are a Hill Country institution. The surrounding Frio Canyon communities — Leakey, Concan, and Utopia — provide cabin rentals and the rural Hill Country atmosphere.

Three to Four Hours

Marfa (5 hours west)

The art-world destination in the West Texas desert — Donald Judd’s large-scale installations at the Chinati Foundation have made this tiny town an internationally recognized contemporary-art pilgrimage. The Marfa Prada installation, the Marfa lights viewing area, and the town’s improbable restaurant and hotel scene create an experience that defies its remote location. Big Bend National Park, another two hours south, extends the trip into one of the most spectacular and least-visited national parks in the system.

Port Aransas and the Gulf Coast (3.5 hours southeast)

Port Aransas provides the closest Gulf Coast beach experience — a barrier-island town with fishing, beachcombing, and the casual-coastal atmosphere that Texas beach towns maintain. The ferry ride to the island is part of the experience. Corpus Christi, across the bay, adds the Texas State Aquarium, the USS Lexington museum ship, and the broader coastal amenities. Mustang Island State Park provides the more natural beach experience.

Nature-Focused Escapes

Hamilton Pool Preserve (45 minutes west) — A collapsed grotto with a 50-foot waterfall into a turquoise pool — one of the most dramatic natural swimming spots in Texas. Reservation required.

Pedernales Falls State Park (45 minutes west) — The Pedernales River cascades over limestone terraces in a Hill Country setting that provides hiking, swimming, and the geological interest that Central Texas limestone creates.

Colorado Bend State Park (2 hours northwest) — Gorman Falls — a 70-foot spring-fed waterfall cascading over moss-covered travertine — is the park’s signature feature. Cave tours and riverside hiking round out the experience.

Austin’s Hill Country position makes weekend escapes feel like entering a different world — from spring-fed rivers and granite domes to German heritage towns and world-class barbecue, the variety within two hours is unmatched in Texas.
