Volunteering in Columbus: How to Give Back in Your Community

May 30, 2026

Columbus’s community-service infrastructure is robust — the city’s combination of major universities, corporate headquarters, and a collaborative civic culture creates a volunteer ecosystem that’s organized and accessible. Here’s how to get involved.

Food Security Organizations

Mid-Ohio Food Collective is Central Ohio’s largest food bank, distributing millions of pounds of food annually. Volunteers sort and pack food at the distribution center, assist at community produce markets, and help with fundraising events. The organization offers flexible scheduling including evening and weekend shifts.

Columbus City Schools’ Community Food Pantries and LifeCare Alliance (which operates Meals on Wheels for Central Ohio) provide direct-service volunteer opportunities that put you face-to-face with community members who benefit from the help.

Housing and Community Development

Habitat for Humanity — MidOhio builds and renovates homes throughout the Columbus metro. Construction volunteers receive on-site training, and no experience is necessary. The organization’s Women Build and Youth Build programs create focused volunteer communities within the broader organization.

Rebuilding Together Central Ohio repairs and renovates homes for low-income homeowners, preserving affordable housing stock and helping seniors and people with disabilities maintain their independence. The annual National Rebuilding Day is one of the largest volunteer events in Central Ohio.

Youth and Education

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio matches mentors with young people. The time commitment is manageable — typically two to four outings per month — and the organization provides ongoing training and support.

COSI (Center of Science and Industry) welcomes volunteers for educational programming, exhibit support, and special events. COSI’s national reputation means volunteering there connects you with a high-quality educational institution.

Godman Guild provides educational, recreational, and social-service programming in the Weinland Park and University District neighborhoods. Volunteers assist with after-school programs, adult education, and community events.

Environmental and Outdoor

Friends of the Scioto Mile organize river cleanups and beautification projects along the Scioto River corridor. Columbus Recreation and Parks Department coordinates volunteer opportunities at the city’s 360+ parks, including trail maintenance, community garden assistance, and park cleanups.

The Nature Conservancy — Ohio Chapter organizes habitat restoration events at preserves across Central Ohio, including the Edge of Appalachia Preserve and sites closer to Columbus.

How to Find Opportunities

HandsOn Central Ohio operates as the volunteer clearinghouse for the region, maintaining a searchable database of opportunities and organizing group volunteer events. United Way of Central Ohio coordinates community-wide campaigns and connects volunteers with agencies that match their interests and availability.
