Holiday Events in Raleigh: Seasonal Activities Guide
Raleigh’s blend of Southern charm, university energy, and growing cultural scene creates a year-round calendar of events that reflects the city’s evolving identity. From outdoor festivals in the mild spring and fall to cozy winter celebrations, the City of Oaks delivers seasonal activities for every interest. Here’s your guide.
Spring Events (March–May)
Artsplosure
Raleigh’s premier arts festival takes over downtown Fayetteville Street for a weekend in May. The juried art show features over 170 artists, with live music on multiple stages, interactive art installations, food vendors, and street performers. Artsplosure has been a Raleigh tradition for over 40 years and marks the unofficial kickoff to the outdoor festival season.
Got to Be NC Festival
Held at the State Fairgrounds in May, this festival celebrates North Carolina agriculture, food, and culture. Attendees can sample local wines, enjoy farm-to-table food demonstrations, and explore exhibits showcasing the state’s agricultural heritage. It’s a family-friendly event that connects the Triangle’s urban residents with North Carolina’s farming roots.
IBMA Bluegrass Live!
Raleigh has become an unlikely but enthusiastic home for bluegrass music, hosting the International Bluegrass Music Association. The spring showcase brings performances to venues across downtown, with free outdoor shows along Fayetteville Street and ticketed events at Red Hat Amphitheater and other locations.
Summer Events (June–August)
July Fourth at Dix Park
The city’s Independence Day celebration at Dorothea Dix Park features live music, food trucks, family activities, and a fireworks display with views of the downtown skyline. The park’s elevated terrain provides one of the best vantage points in the area for fireworks viewing.
North Carolina Beer Month
June is officially Beer Month in North Carolina, and Raleigh’s craft brewery scene goes all out. Special releases, brewery collaborations, beer dinners, and tap takeovers happen across the Triangle’s 30-plus craft breweries. The World Beer Festival in Durham, a short drive from Raleigh, caps the month with one of the largest beer festivals on the East Coast.
SPARKcon
This community-created arts festival in September (bridging summer and fall) transforms downtown Raleigh into a participatory creative experience. Unlike traditional art festivals where attendees observe, SPARKcon invites everyone to create. Dance battles, improv performances, chalk art, fashion shows, and maker workshops fill the streets around Fayetteville Street and City Market.
Fall Events (September–November)
North Carolina State Fair
The NC State Fair is one of the biggest events of the year, running for 11 days in October at the State Fairgrounds. Over a million visitors enjoy carnival rides, agricultural exhibits, livestock competitions, live music, and legendary fair food including the famous deep-fried everything. The State Fair is deeply woven into Triangle culture and draws visitors from across the state.
Hopscotch Music Festival
This three-day music festival in September showcases indie, experimental, and emerging artists across downtown venues ranging from large theaters to intimate clubs. Hopscotch has earned a national reputation for its adventurous booking and has helped solidify Raleigh’s credibility as a music destination.
Triangle Oktoberfest
Held in October at Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, Triangle Oktoberfest features German beer, food, music, and traditional activities. The event has grown into one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations in the Southeast.
Raleigh Christmas Parade
One of the largest holiday parades in the Southeast, the Raleigh Christmas Parade in November features marching bands, floats, community groups, and of course Santa Claus. The parade route through downtown draws tens of thousands of spectators and marks the beginning of the holiday season.
Winter Events (December–February)
WRAL Nights of Lights
The annual light show at Dix Park (formerly held at Dorothea Dix campus) features synchronized light displays set to music that visitors drive through. It runs from late November through the end of December and has become one of the Triangle’s most popular holiday traditions.
First Night Raleigh
Raleigh’s New Year’s Eve celebration is one of the largest First Night events in the country. The family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration features live performances at venues throughout downtown, culminating in an acorn drop at midnight at Fayetteville Street (a nod to the City of Oaks nickname). Over 40,000 people typically attend.
Raleigh Winter Restaurant Week
Held in January, this event features prix-fixe menus at restaurants across the Triangle, encouraging residents to explore new dining options during the quieter winter months. With the Triangle’s food scene growing rapidly, it’s become a popular tradition for adventurous diners.
Year-Round Activities
Raleigh offers abundant free activities year-round, including free admission to all Smithsonian-affiliated North Carolina museums downtown. The Neuse River Greenway Trail, Art Museum Park, and Umstead State Park provide outdoor recreation in every season.
