Historic Garden Week
Virginia’s Historic Garden Week is the largest open house tour in the country, and Richmond plays a central role. Dominion Energy Riverrock
This outdoor sports and music festival along the James River downtown has become one of the premier outdoor festivals on the East Coast. Held over three days in May, Riverrock features trail running, kayaking, bouldering competitions, mountain biking, and live music. The festival celebrates Richmond’s identity as an outdoor recreation hub and draws athletes and spectators from across the region.
Strawberry Hill Races
The Strawberry Hill Races at Colonial Downs (formerly at the State Fairgrounds) are a spring social tradition combining horse racing with tailgating, live music, and community gathering. The event draws thousands of dressed-up attendees and has been a Richmond tradition for decades.

Friday Cheers

Fourth of July at Dogwood Dell

Carytown Watermelon Festival

Richmond Folk Festival
The Richmond Folk Festival along the James River downtown is one of the city’s most beloved events. State Fair of Virginia
The State Fair runs for 11 days in late September and early October at the Meadow Event Park (about 20 minutes north of the city). It features agricultural exhibits, livestock competitions, carnival rides, fair food, and concert acts. The fair is a fall tradition for Richmond-area families.
Oktoberfest at Hardywood
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s Oktoberfest celebration in Scott’s Addition is one of the largest in the region, featuring German-style beers, food, live music, and traditional activities. Richmond’s thriving craft beer community makes this one of the most anticipated fall events.
Monument Avenue 10K
While held in spring (late March), the Monument Avenue 10K has become Richmond’s largest running event, drawing over 25,000 participants. The course runs through the historic Fan District and along Monument Avenue, with neighborhoods hosting block parties along the route.

GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
Richmond’s premier holiday light display transforms Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden into a winter wonderland with over a million lights. The event runs from late November through early January and includes model train displays, holiday decorations, fire pits, and seasonal refreshments. Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg
